To spark kids’ interest in data literacy, SAS created The Batting Lab, a state-of-the-art, AI-powered batting cage that turned baseball swings into teachable data moments. Over six weeks, ten kids trained inside a bespoke environment that analyzed each swing in real time using cameras, sensors, computer vision, machine learning, and IoT analytics, comparing their form to thousands of elite swings and visualizing the results instantly. What felt like swing practice was actually a data literacy Trojan horse, helping kids learn how to read, interpret, and act on data while improving their performance.
Built from the ground up in collaboration with architects, technologists, designers, coaches, and elite baseball testers, the experience combined custom software, immersive design, and interactive data visualization to make data tangible and engaging.
